Code of Practice
One of the non-negotiable rules of the psychologists’ profession, is the safeguarding of the information the client shares with the psychologist. The psychologist’s obligation to confidentiality is governed by law. All the information shared is treated as confidential at all times, during but also after the end of the therapy sessions. Consequently, no third party regardless of the relationship with the client (e.g. child, partner, etc.) can have access to them.
Nevertheless, the law determines that the professional confidentiality is allowed to be broken in exceptional circumstances. Those include the following: when the psychologist has concluded that her client’s or other person’s safety, physical integrity or even life are at risk and in case of a demand in writing by the authorities, usually after informing the client. It should be noted that only the absolutely necessary information would be provided to the relevant authorities. For further information please review the Code of Practice of Greek Psychologists (ΦΕΚ 2344/18.06.2019).
